Receiving the Eucharist Reverently
1 Corinthians 11:27 – Saint Paul teaches, “Whoever, therefore eats the bread, or drinks, the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgement upon themselves.”
That being the case; if we are not properly disposed to receive the sacrament, of the Eucharist we do not receive the graces of Christ through the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, as the graces that should flow, are hindered by our own shortcomings (sins).
I ask you to consider being as reverent as possible when receiving “the bread of life, and the cup of salvation.” Items for you to ponder and consider.
- Please if you receive by the hand place the left hand on top of the right hand (flat) as if a throne, once the host is placed on your hand – take your right hand and remove the host from the hand to consume it – most people take one step aside to consume, it is proper to consume before the Priest, Deacon, or EMOHC, if you take more than on step the ministers have been trained to stop giving out communion to make sure you have consumed.
- If you receive by tongue, do not “Bite” the hand that feeds you, please just stick out your tongue slightly and allow us to place the host on your tongue before you start moving.
- Receiving the cup – please slow movements – not grabbing the cup quickly – but with two hands receive the cup take a sip of the blood of Christ and reverently hand back the cup to the EMOHC. (To prevent spillage)
These small things mean a lot to our overall disposition in the reception of Christ. Please utilize the sacrament of reconciliation (please do not receive Jesus if you have mortal sin on your hearts) and then we can receive all the “spiritual graces” of Christ for our daily lives by receiving Him worthily and reverently. God Bless you all!
More of Him; less of me
